In 30 Essential Yoga Poses, Judith Lasater draws on her wealth of yoga practice and teaching experience, as well as her training as a physical therapist, to present this comprehensive guide for beginning students and their teachers.
In Part One, "Beginning with an Ancient Tradition," she discusses yoga's ancient eightfold path and its relevance in today's world. In Part Two, "Being a Student, Being a Teacher," she goes to the heart of yoga, that is, the all-important student-teacher relationship. Students will find this part helpful in selecting an appropriate teacher. Her discussion about creating clear boundaries is invaluable support for teachers who wish to establish, as she advocates, "a restorative environment" for their students.
She describes thirty essential yoga poses (asana), their variations, and breathing practices (pranayama) in Part Three, "The Poses." She offers guidance for the student practicing at home, and points for the teacher to take into his or her classroom.
In Part Four, "The Practice," she puts the poses together in four ways:
* a sequence for busy days
* a sequence for each day of the week
* themed sequences for
· lower back pain
· hip and hamstring flexibility
· shoulder and upper back flexibility
* a sequence using the thirty essential yoga poses
Each sequence is presented as a photographic chart for easy visual reference, and includes a "Mantra for Daily Practice."
Part Five, "And More," includes a glossary of anatomical terms and resources for further study.
About the Author
Judith Hanson Lasater has taught yoga since 1971. She holds a doctorate in East-West psychology and is a physical therapist. She is president of the California Yoga Teachers Association, and serves on the advisory boards of Yoga Journal and Healing Lifestyles and Spas. Her yoga training includes study with B. K. S. Iyengar in India and the United States. She teaches yoga classes and trains yoga teachers in kinesiology, yoga therapeutics, and the Yoga Sutra in the San Francisco Bay Area. She also gives workshops throughout the United States, and has taught in Australia, Bolivia, Canada, England, France, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Peru, and Russia.
Her popular "Asana" column ran in Yoga Journal for thirteen years, and she continues to contribute articles on a variety of subjects. In addition, her writing has appeared in numerous magazines and books, including Healing Lifestyles, Yoga International, Yoga Chicago, Ascent, LA Yoga, Natural Health, Sports Illustrated for Women, Prevention, Alternative Therapies, Numedx, International Journal of Yoga Therapy, Complementary Therapies in Rehabilitation, Yogini, The Woman's Book of Yoga and Health, Living Yoga, American Yoga, The New Yoga for People Over 50, and Lilias, Yoga, and Your Life.
Currently, Judith is consulting on four studies being conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These studies focus on the use of restorative yoga to reduce hot flashes in menopausal women, to reduce metabolic syndrome, to reduce anxiety during drug rehabilitation, and for women in treatment for breast cancer.
